Hof van Saeys

In the heart of Dendermonde, on the former abbey site along the Oude Vest, Hof van Saeys has risen as a large-scale urban renewal project that harmoniously weaves together living, working, and public space. In this car-free and green urban development, contemporary architecture and historical awareness come together in a vibrant new city district, with a strong focus on sustainability, quality, and experience.

Project overview

For the façade finish, a combination of the Baran and Polaris bricks from Floren was chosen. The dark, earthy tones of Baran bring depth and calmness, while the lighter, nuanced shades of Polaris add freshness and contrast. Together, they create a refined layering in the façade design, perfectly in line with the architectural concept in which different volumes are articulated around courtyards, pedestrian paths, and the restored waterway ’t Vaardeken.

The bricks were laid with flush vertical joints and a narrow horizontal joint, resulting in a sleek and rhythmic façade with pronounced vertical accents. This jointing technique enhances the homogeneity of the masonry and allows the rich textures and nuances of both the Baran and Polaris bricks to fully stand out. The result exudes tranquility, refinement, and dynamism, offering a contemporary interpretation of traditional materials.

In addition, for the separation between the stream and the adjoining woodland, the Floren Avorio was used in claustra bond. This light brick introduces a subtle, airy structure and creates a transparent transition between the natural and built environment. The Avorio thus contributes to a soft and harmonious integration of the project into its landscape context.

The architecture of Hof van Saeys, designed by OYO Architects, is based on the principles of light, air, and quality of life. The more than one hundred apartments meet BEN standards and are equipped with energy-efficient technologies such as heat pumps and green roofs.

Hof van Saeys demonstrates that brick architecture, when carefully designed and executed, can provide an urban project with refinement, identity, and sustainability. The deliberate choice for Baran, Polaris, and Avorio, combined with a flush and finely detailed brickwork pattern, underlines this ambition in a robust and timeless way, always with attention to detail and context.
